About Henry

I turned 40, which seems to be that transitional age for most everyone; five years ago.  I had just quit smoking the year before and weighed in at around 275.  I tried working out at the Y with limited success.  About a year later, a colleague of mine invited me to try out a boot camp that used our college as their base of operations.  I joined and through lots of hard work, anxiety, several ups and downs and a lot of sweat:  I got down to 230, got in shape and became an instructor!  I also fell in love with running.  As part of our boot camp, we traditionally do a “long run” once a week where we go 3-4 miles.  I still remember the first time as a boot camper when I ran the whole 3 miles without stopping to walk.  That gave me the “bug” and I began to enjoy it more but I still wanted to want to love it.  A friend turned me on to the book “Born to Run” and you could say it changed my outlook and taught me to love running.  Reading about the joy of the  Tarahumara and some of the other characters of the book really changed how I viewed running.  I stopped looking at it as a chore and started just appreciating the freedom and joy of just putting on my shoes and going for a run.  Now I have been running regularly for over a year and continue to instruct boot camp.  I strive to keep expanding the distance of my runs as well as the experience of being out there and sharing it with others, either on  the road or with this blog.  Welcome to my blog!
